Ronald Reagan’s Liberty Bomb Explodes in California

On Wednesday afternoon U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker struck down Proposition 8 and reopened the door to same sex marriage in California. The case will now be appealed to the 9th Circuit Court and likely go from there to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Proposition 8 was a controversial ballot initiative to ban gay marriage which passed last year after a high pressure media campaign which pitted hardcore religious conservatives and the Mormon church against civil libertarians and Hollywood activists. The result was to override a prior court ruling which had led to a brief period of legalization for gay marriage under which 18,000 couples were married. The status of those couples and of future gay marriages in California remains unresolved until judge Walker decides whether or not to put his ruling on hold pending appeal.

Jason Isaac BBQs some liberal

Since I commented on Speaker Straus’ headlining of a fundraiser for State Representative Patrick Rose, I have gotten to know his opponent, Jason Isaac, and the people of HD 45. Many people had told me that Jason was “the real deal,” someone who stands by his principles and can beat Rose with an impressive grassroots effort. Fair enough, that sounds pretty good, but it wasn’t until June 22nd that I fully understood this sentiment.

On June 22nd Jason Isaac had a fundraiser at the Railroad BBQ in Kyle, Texas with State Representatives (and staunch conservatives) Dan Flynn and Phil King. Holding a meet and greet or fundraiser for a state representative is pretty difficult. Sadly, most people don’t know who their state representative is or what district they even live in! As you can imagine, drawing a crowd at events for candidates for state representative is even more difficult, but Jason did it.

Originally, his campaign had been slated for just half of the restaurant, but over 100 supporters ended up packing the place! A few of us were even left standing as it was difficult to find seating, listen to our speakers, and most importantly, hear when our BBQ was ready above all of the excitement.

Now many people have said that Jason Isaac is “the real deal,” but no one puts it better than Jason when he says, “I’m not a lawyer, and I’m not an incumbent.” Nothing against lawyers, but in his standard Dickie’s work shirts, Jason was making the point that he’s just like anyone of us and understands what we need in Austin unlike his pampered opponent who calls himself a small-businessman but has barely owned a law firm for a few months, much less rolled up his sleeves and worked a hard day in his life.

Jason Isaac is not afraid to be honest with the voters about who he is, while Patrick Rose is afraid and for good reason! Throughout the evening, Jason met with as many people as he could and even shared some personal stories with us; some were even kind of embarrassing, but that is the kind of down-to-earth and personable person that he is. On the other hand, when he is out campaigning, Patrick Rose consistently hides from his record and never calls himself a Democrat. He knows that he does not represent the people of HD 45 and must misrepresent himself to get elected! Jason Isaac does not have this problem because he would do an excellent job at representing HD 45 and is eager to meet and speak to his neighbors.

Texas is not the land of the elite, entitled, and pampered. Texas is the home of the hard-working, God-fearing, family-oriented man who understands that the government that governs best, governs least. The people of HD 45 have a clear choice in Jason Isaac, and by the strong showing of support I saw at his fundraiser, I think that it is about time Patrick Rose starts either looking for a real job, updating his resume, or spending more time learning how to run a small business.

Mike Lee and Nikki Haley Win Runoffs

Republican Liberty Caucus endorsed candidates in Utah and South Carolina won their runoffs last night.

Congratulations to Mike Lee, who narrowly defeated Tim Bridgewater in the Utah U.S. Senate race. Lee will be a voice for common sense in the Senate after he wins in November. Until then, we have to make sure he is able to fend off his Democrat opponent.

In South Carolina, Nikki Haley won her run-off against bailout-supporting Congressman Gresham Barrett. Haley will be the first female Governor if she is elected. She will also be the 2nd southern Republican Governor of Indian origin currently serving. It’s good to see the Republican Party in a southern state embracing diversity and independent thinking.

In South Carolina’s 8th District, the votes were so close between RLC endorsed candidate Nancy Harrelson and her opponent that there will be a recount.

Congratulations to Mike Lee and Nikki Haley, their campaign teams, and Utah/South Carolina voters!

Why We Fight for Texas

Si vis pacem, parra bellum. ”If you want peace, prepare for war.”

When I was a boy I visited Goliad, The Alamo, and San Jacinto with my family. The memories and heritage of what it means to be from the Republic of Texas struck a deep chord in me that rang through my heart and through my soul, and still does.

I’ve been back many times. Each time I am humbled and awed by the magnificence of these events — of the bravery, selflessness and sacrifice which, by the Grace of God, granted Texas our Freedom. The feelings I had in my youth have become even stronger as I’ve matured and gained more understanding of what these men gave.

Texas began it’s life as an Independent Republic on March 2, 1836. We chose to become Americans by our free will, but we always remain, first and foremost, Texans. This is the true meaning of “Texas Pride.” It is why we so strongly believe in the 10th Amendment of the United States Constitution and states’ rights. We recognize the millstone of tyranny, and we treat it with the utter contempt it deserves.

The current occupant of the White House is bereft of such a heritage of freedom and it shows in his arrogance, his false words and his actions. He is a product of privilege and luxury, as was Santa Anna. Both shall suffer the same defeat.

When Santa Anna was captured, (hiding in the uniform of a private), Sam Houston ordered the Generalissimo brought before him, unharmed at the famous Treaty Oak. The Texans clamored for revenge. Most dearly wanted to hang Santa Anna, but General Sam was wise. He told his troops, “You’d settle for blood. I WANT TEXAS!” With that, Santa Anna signed over all Mexican rights to Texas.

We are reclaiming our country from another tyrant in Washington DC.

In the end, we all fight for each other. The Patriots who suffered terribly at Valley Forge and spent 6 long years fighting for American Independence, and the soldiers, sailors and airmen currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan understand this all too well.
