Militant Pakistani, not a White Male Tea Partier, and in fact, voted for Obama

Oh how things have changed so dramatically in this 24 hour news cycle of ours. Yesterday, the Right was on the defensive, fearing that indeed the Terrorist in New York would turn out to be some crazed Militia type, or Tea Party supporter. NPR led off their news report, “Top suspect a White Male…”

As Sister Toldjah describes below, some of the usual leftwing suspects, chimed in with the same talking points:

This is great news, and I hope the Feds have indeed got “their guy,” and I also hope that he leads them to other Islamofascist terrorists who were involved in this plot and perhaps who have been in the proceess of planning future terror attacks on Americans and other innocents both on our soil and abroad.

That said, I won’t hold my breath waiting for apologies from Democrat strategist Bob Beckel and Democrat Congressman Jerrold Nadler, both of whom yesterday suggested the Times Square bomber might well have been part of some “right wing” plot. Liberal NYC Mayor Bloomberg speculated it might be someone who “didn’t like the healthcare bill.” Beneath contempt all.

Watch the story now die a slow death on the back pages of the NY Times, WaPo, and relegated to the sidebar at CNN.com.

HuffPo (h/t Memeo) is already spinning, saying that the bigger story of the day is the court ruling in Detroit on the alleged Militia members, the Hutaree. A liberal judge released them on bail saying the Feds had not made a strong enough case. Wrote HuffPo writer Louis Klavas, an NYU prof. “Do the Hutaree Militia Members Pose a Terrorist Threat?”:

On Monday, while Americans were fixated on the hunt for and subsequent arrest of Faisal Shahzad for his alleged role in the Times Square bomb plot, an equally important terrorism-related story that was breaking in Detroit went relatively unnoticed.

It’s also going to be interesting to watch the “head-in-the-sand” on Islamo-Fascism leftside of the libertarian movement. Leftwing libertarians, with the notable exception of Nick Gillespie of Reason, always seek to downplay the importance and the threat of Radical Islam. It doesn’t fit their template. After all, if they acknowledge the threat, than they also have to offer a solution. And that solution more than not, involves their dreaded foreign intervention with US Troops.

We on the rightside of the libertarian movement acknowledge the threat we face, recognize it, and wish to fight back on all fronts. The bombing two days ago in Times Square just highlights how much we’ve been right all along, and all our opponents, liberals, pacifists, paleo-libertarians, paleo-conservatives, socialists, and most especially Obama Democrats have been dead wrong.

LR ELECTION ANALYSIS

In Wisconsin’s conservative 8th Congressional District, seven Republicans are running to defeat Democrat Congressman Steve Kagen, a vocal supporter of Obamacare and a medical doctor himself. The 8th district’s two largest cities, Green Bay and Appleton, are both Republican strongholds. In 2006 and 2008, Republican House Speaker John Gard lost to Kagen, but in 2006 he lost by less than two percentage points.

Republicans in the district are split on who they should select to be the nominee, with four people considered the major contenders. Of the four major players, former three-term State Representative Terri McCormick has been a darling of the state’s small-but-growing libertarian Republican base and should also receive support from various Tea Party groups in the district. McCormick created Wisconsin’s charter school laws and pushed legislation through to allow for more entrepreneurs to create small businesses in the tax-heavy upper Midwestern state.

As for Congressman Kagen (D), he supported both Obamacare (and used his status as a doctor to woo Blue Dog Democrats to vote for the bill) and the $17.5 billion Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (H.R. 2487), which enables the federal government to withold 30% of all capital flows leaving the country (see http://www.zerohedge.com/article/its-official-america-now-enforces-capital-controls). Kagen also voted for TARP and the stimulus bill. He voted in favor of Waxman-Markey Cap-and-Trade bill (see http://kerrythomas.com/Archives/Kimosabi.htm for details). Kagen has gotten a 7% rating (out of 100%) from both National Taxpayers Union and Citizens Against Government Waste. His largest contributors are unions.

One of Terri McCormick’s main opponents is State Representative Roger Roth, who was elected to McCormick’s Assembly seat in 2006 when she upheld her term limits pledge. Representative Roth is a darling of the Republican Party Establishment, which has a terrible record of electing Republicans in the state (see: John Gard vs. Steve Kagen, 2006 and 2008, for example). At a public forum with all of the Republican candidates in January, Roger Roth had the following to say about the U.S. Constitution:

“At the end of the day, it’s just a piece of paper with a lot of words on it…”

In short, Roger thinks the Constitution is a flexible piece of paper, but that we “should elect people who believe in that!”

Halloran already seen as a “Top US Politician.”

Dan Halloran, former Chairman of the New York Republican Liberty Caucus, and a longtime member of the Libertarian Party, won election to the New York City Council, representing an upper Queens district last November. Halloran was elected on both the Republican Party and Libertarian Party lines. He currently serves as the highest elected Libertarian Party member in the Nation.

Since being on the Council, he’s been a lightening rod for tax relief and loosening of regulations on small business. Now, he’s taking his hardline free market message international.

From the Sofia News Agency April 17 “Top US Politicians Vow Support for Bulgarian Conservatives”:

The conservatives, led by party leader, Yane Yanev and party members, Atanas Semov and Zhivko Temelkov were met in New York by Dan Halloran, who is a Republican, Libertarian, Independence and Conservative member of the New York City City Council.

Holloran greeted the Bulgarian delegation with: “The Republican Party stands by you, by RZS and Yane Yanev. You can count on us any time!”

The meeting brought a conclusion to a series of intense discussions with high-ranking American politicians, including former US Defense Minister, Donald Rumsfeld.

During the conversation with Halloran, the parties have exchanged ideas about the need t change Bulgaria’s Constitution in order to provide citizens with more opportunities to control State and local power structures. Yanev had appraised the US Republicans with his party’s effort to call a national referendum for a new Constitution, a move strongly acclaimed by Holloran.

Dan Holloran had further accepted to visit Sofia in the summer and share his experience in constitutional law, municipal management, and campaign organization. The Republican leader has agreed to lead a training course for the RZS candidates for the local elections in 2011, and invited Yanev to send young leaders to New York for education and training that would be financed by the Republican Party and the City Council. Other high-ranking Republicans have further stated their readiness to serve as moderators along with their teams for the RZS election campaign.

Note – besides Halloran, Libertarians also serve on the City Councils in Indianapolis, Springfield, MO, Cedar Rapids, IA, and numerous other towns and cities nationwide, most especially California, Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania.

Michael Q. Sullivan, our friend from Empower Texans, and a former co-worker of mine in the congressional office of Rep. Ron Paul, brings us some good news. A candidate we have been highlighting here at LR, a solid Rick Perry style “libertarian-conservative” (as he was described by the local media in Lubbock), has won his primary run-off election.

House District 84: In this open seat, John Frullo won a strong victory over Mark Griffin.

Given Lubbock’s overwhelming Republican orientation, Frullo is virtually assured of being the next State Rep. for the area.

Frullo is a small businessman fiercely opposed to ObamaCare, and to federal mandates on the states.

In fact, six of the seven candidates we (Empower Texas) endorsed won last night! Here’s a quick wrap-up of our winning endorsements:
-> House District 14: State Rep. Fred Brown (who earned our “Taxpayer Advocate” award) easily won re-election.
-> House District 52: Republican Larry Gonzales won a strong run-off victory, and now faces incumbent Dianna Maldonado in November.
-> House District 66: Van Taylor won big over Mabrie Jackson… but it may not be over here. Because incumbent Brian McCall resigned his seat, there will be a special election on May 8.
-> House District 83: Charles Perry easily defeated incumbent Delwin Jones, perennially one of the worst Republicans in the Legislature.
-> House District 149: Conservative Jack O’Connor won his run-off, ready to face Democrat incumbent Hubert Vo in November.

The Tea Party Express (website: www.TeaPartyExpress.org) will conduct a news conference with accredited members of the press corps on Thursday, April 15, 2010 – 9:00 AM at the National Press Club.

At Thursday’s news conference the Tea Party Express will unveil our 2010 Election Targets for House & Senate races across the country – announcing candidates we are endorsing and those we will be opposing.

The Tea Party Express has led all other tea party organizations in fundraising and expenditure of funds both supporting and opposing candidates.

There’s been a growing controversy this past week over Libertarian radio talk show host Neal Boortz and his longtime relationship with the Libertarian Party. Boortz was a keynote speaker for an LP National Convention in the late 1990s. He often boasts of a longtime membership and friendship with the Georgia LP. But a Texas Libertarian sent out a press release the other day, saying that he had been “booted” from the upcomming LP National Convention for St. Louis in May. It was titled “Libertarian Party Boots Boortz.”

Boortz strongly disputes this claim on his website, “Not that I care…”

Sorry Mr. Butler, but you have this a bit wrong. Last week I instructed Belinda (photo) to inform the Libertarian Party that I would be unable to keep this speaking engagement for personal reasons.” According to Butler The Libertarian Party “removed me” from the schedule because of comments I made regarding voting for a 3rd party this November.

Whatever, Mr. Butler. If you want to say that I was “booted” from the schedule, have at it. It’s your credibility that suffers, not mine.

He then goes on to explain his view in detail, that local LPers running is just fine. But he’s concerned about upper level races such as Congress.

By the way …. I have an email from a top-ranking official in the Libertarian Party who, after listening to my comments regarding voting for a 3rd party in November, is going to resign his position. Why? Because he felt that what I said made sense. We cannot afford a 3rd party effort this year if it is going to leave one single Democrat in office who otherwise might have been removed. I still plan to vote Libertarian in local elections .. but I simply cannot afford the luxury when it comes to the Congress.

Editor’s Comment – I disagree slightly with Neal on this. There are tons of Libertarian Party members who wouldn’t come out to the polls otherwise. They’d simply choose to stay home. Having a Libertarian Party candidate on the ballot motivates them to vote. And given Libertarian’s general tendency to vote Republican as a second choice, this could help GOP candidates in races where no Libertarian is listed.

We’re generally not in the business of endorsements here at Libertarian Republican. That’s the job of the Republican Liberty Caucus. And as members of the RLC we back 99% of all the candidates Dave Nalle, and the RLC Board endorse.

Though, no official endorsements have been made, it’s safe to say that the vast majority of Libertarian Republicans are backing Chuck DeVore. Honestly Chuck’s behind. Tom Campbell of Carly Fiornia? That’s a decision for all Libertarian Republicans to make on their own. I would lean strongly towards Fiornia, for the simple fact that’s she’s female. Plus, she seems to me to be a risk-taker, and most certainly a great promoter of free enterprise.

Our readers should be made aware, that we here at Libertarian Republican have been contacted repeatedly by Campbell supporters (who could be connected officially with his campaign?)trying to convince us that he’s a “libertarian.” Unfortunately, the communications from their camp has led me to believe they are unaware that Libertarian Republian represents a decidedly Pro-Defense/Anti-Islamist view. In my view, they may have mistaken us for the Ron Paul wing.

The following information should serve to help at least Pro-Defense Libertarians to make a decision. Jimmy LaSalvia is well-trusted. His organization represents a Hard Right version of the Log Cabin Clubs. It’s safe to say that we agree with Jimmy and GOPProud on virtually all issues. His view on Campbell expressed in this press release should carry a great deal of weight with readers of this website, and with the overall Libertarian Republican community.

(Washington, D.C.) – According to press reports, former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell (R-CA) is courting gay voters in his current run for U.S. Senate. “Gay voters should know where Tom Campbell stands on all the issues,” said Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOProud – the only national organization representing gay conservatives and their allies. “The greatest threat facing gay people worldwide is the spread of radical anti-gay Islam. Unfortunately, Tom Campbell’s record makes it clear he either doesn’t understand that or is unwilling to confront it.”

Campbell wrote a letter of support for convicted terrorist Sami Al-Arian, who actually raised money for Campbell’s failed run for Senate in 2000. Al-Arian was indicted in February 2003 as the North American head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad. In the indictment, it was revealed that in Al-Arian’s communications with his colleagues were discussions of terrorist operations. Among the victims of these operations in Israel were several Americans.

“Tom Campbell raised money from and publicly voiced support for a convicted terrorist,” continued LaSalvia. “A man who once publicly declared, ‘Jihad is our path. Victory to Islam. Death to Israel. Revolution. Revolution until victory. Rolling to Jerusalem.”

In his failed 2000 Senate bid, Campbell called for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem, argued that Israel received too much U.S. aid, and attacked former President Bill Clinton for being too pro-Israel.

While in Congress, Campbell was one of only a handful of Representatives to vote against both a resolution expressing support for Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and against the unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state.

“Israel is one of the United States most important and loyal allies, and quite frankly Tom Campbell’s record and rhetoric look more like Pat Buchanan’s then Ronald Reagan’s,” said LaSalvia. “Israel is a beacon of freedom and tolerance in a sea of radically anti-gay regimes in the Middle East. You simply cannot claim to support equality of opportunity for gays and lesbians while at the same time seeking to undermine the only country in the Middle East that treats gay people with dignity and respect.”

In 2000, Campbell supported easing sanctions on the anti-gay regime of Saddam Hussein, and in 2004, Campbell called for the complete withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.

“GOProud is a vocal supporter of Israel, and as an organization, we believe strongly in the need to elect leaders who will stand up for Israel and will fight the spread of radical anti-gay Islam. Sadly, Tom Campbell’s rhetoric and record make it clear he is not one of those leaders,” concluded LaSalvia.

Final note – This website will back whichever Republican candidate wins the primary. Though, Tom Campbell may have some questionable views on Israel and foreign policy in general, there’s no doubt he would be a vast improvement over Barbara Boxer in every regard, should he prevail in the primary.

Wounded Warriors, Walter Reed VA Hospital

Goldwaterite libertarian-republican

Robert Heinlein called the Grandfather of Science Fiction, has long been identified as one of the greatest of libertarian writers. But this may be the first time he’s received the “libertarian Republican” label.

From a review of influential books by Daniel McCarthy the Tory Anarchist at The American Conservative March 31 on-line:

Robert Heinlein, Red Planet (1983). Since this was the first non-picture-book I read, it should be fair to say it influenced me. The only conscious influence I can detect is that it sufficiently enjoyable that I was motivated to read more. Subconsciously, though, who knows? Heinlein was a Goldwaterite libertarian-republican, I learned what an IOU was from reading this book, and as I recall it ends with the young protagonist’s Martian friend having to leave his human society and rejoin his own people — something of a cultural particularist theme, perhaps?

Note – Heinlein was a proud Veteran of the US Navy, and unlike other libertarians of the day, took a very strong on defense view, particularly against the rise of Communism and the Soviet Union.

Sarah Palin announced on her Facebook page late yesterday three endorsements for US Congress. The three Republicans include: Adam Kinzinger in Illinois, Allen West in Florida and Vaughn Ward in Idaho.

Both Kinzinger and West have been featured here at Libertarian Republican on numerous occasions. Both come solidly from the libertarian wing of the GOP. The third Vaughn Ward is more standard conservative, but was once described by the Idaho Statesman as coming from the “Sarah Palin wing of the GOP.”

All three are Veterans of the United States Military.

Ward in Idaho, Kinzinger in Illinois & West in Florida

Excerpts:

The first is Major Vaughn Ward, a fourth-generation Idaho native who grew up on his family’s farm in Shoshone and is running in Idaho’s 1st Congressional District. Coming from a family with a proud military tradition, Vaughn joined the Marine Corps after college and was finishing up his service when the September 11th attacks occurred. He put his life on hold and heeded his country’s call – serving first as a CIA Operations Officer and later volunteering with the Marine Corps for a combat tour in Iraq, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V. After returning from Iraq, Vaughn went to work for the McCain/Palin campaign. I was grateful for his support then, and I’m happy to support him now…

Vaughn knows that real job growth comes from the private sector, not government. He believes in free market reforms, tax relief for families and small businesses, and a return to a constitutionally limited government that lives within its means. He’ll carry the conservative banner to Washington and will rein in the reckless growth of government to get it back on our side.

The second veteran is Captain Adam Kinzinger, a decorated special-operations pilot who flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Adam is running for Illinois’ 11th Congressional District against a freshman incumbent congresswoman who seemed to pull a bait and switch on voters to get elected. She sounded like a blue dog on the campaign trail, but didn’t vote like one in Washington. Instead, she voted in lockstep with the Pelosi agenda – on Obamacare, the stimulus, cap-and-tax – and the list goes on.

The third veteran is Lieutenant Colonel Allen West, a decorated war hero who’s served with distinction in combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of you may have heard of Allen from a speech he gave last year that became a viral video on YouTube with over 2 million viewers. Allen’s personal story is a testament to the commonsense conservative belief that our nation’s greatness is rooted in freedom, because with freedom comes equal opportunity, and that, coupled with hard work, leads to success. Allen is a small government fiscal conservative running against a leftwing ideologue who’s marched to the beat of Nancy Pelosi on every issue from cap-and-tax to the stimulus, TARP, and, of course, Obamacare.

All Three serving their Country in more ways than One

I believe that these great veterans will fight for us in D.C. to uphold and defend our constitution as courageously in the halls of Congress as they did on the field of battle field.

Of note – Vaughn is running in a 3-way primary for the opportunity to challenge incumbent Democrat Rep. Walt Minnick. Ironically, Minnick is the only Democrat in the entire US House with any libertarian-leanings. Kinzinger and West already have their respective nominations.
